HUMAN CENTERED IMMIGRATION
Why Alan Cares
Alan is the son of immigrants. He knows the United States is a nation of immigrants; it is our heritage and vital to our history. Alan supports a human-centered immigration and refugee policy that protects migrant lives. In Congress, he will fight to repeal the Trump administration’s many exclusionary policies while also supporting legislation that protects migrant rights and provides comprehensive immigration reform including a pathway to citizenship.
The Facts
- There are approximately 12 million undocumented immigrants that contribute to the US economy and communities, accounting for 5.6% of the U.S workforce
- The average number of people detained by DHS on any day has risen to above 50,000 since 2015
- If Alan’s father were a young doctor trying to leave the terrible regime in Iran today to come to America, the door would be closed in his face.
ALAN'S ACTION PLAN
Alan will fight to repeal the Muslim Ban. In Congress, he will push for the National Origin-Based Anti-discrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act, which repeals the discriminatory policy and strengthens existing legislation protecting individuals from discrimination.
Alan will work to eliminate the green card cap. People from certain countries can expect to receive their green card within a year after applying, while others are forced to wait decades. Alan will work to remove this policy because it unfairly discriminates against certain groups of people, many of them from developing nations.
Alan wants to streamline the path to citizenship for the 11 million-plus undocumented workers in our country. Alan will support comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship and provided counsel while opposing harmful policy changes such as cuts in family immigration.
Alan supports cutting funds for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities and enforcement actions because he believes in a human- centered immigration and refugee policy. We cannot cage children in inhumane facilities, and we need to reform ICE before more lives are destroyed. America must remain the beacon of hope for people across the world. We need common-sense security measures, instead of blanket bans, to keep our country safe while offering the American Dream to those who need it most.
Alan supports legislation and executive action that provides legal status to the parents, siblings, and spouses of citizens, lawful permanent resident (LPR holders), and individuals eligible for DACA, individuals who have resided in the country for three or more years, individuals who are “regularly employed,” including agricultural and seasonal workers, and individuals that entered the country after the age of 16 but satisfy the DACA education requirement. Though the Supreme Court recently saved the DACA program from Trump Administration-sponsored elimination, we need to maintain support in the face of renewed conservative opposition because immigrant children do not deserve to be taken away from their families and make contributions to American society.
Alan will also support the passage of a clean DREAM Act which provides a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
