NEWTON CIVIL RIGHTS ICON HUBIE JONES ENDORSES ALAN KHAZEI FOR CONGRESS IN MASSACHUSETTS’ 4TH DISTRICT

(Newton, MA) — Hubie Jones, a Civil Rights leader from Newton who has founded or co-founded more than 40 organizations dedicated to social justice, endorsed Alan Khazei for Congress in Massachusetts’ 4th district today and released the following statement:

“Alan is an extraordinary visionary who gets things done – big things. He is a movement maker who unites diverse people to forge progress and transform lives. Alan is a tireless leader who has a deep commitment to racial, social and economic justice, causes that I have dedicated my life to. His track record of leading change and building movements – from City Year and national service, to Democracy Entrepreneurs is simply extraordinary.”

“As a private citizen, Alan has been the driving force behind successful federal legislation to launch, grow and protect AmeriCorps. That has resulted in putting more than a million people in service here at home and across the country. Just imagine what he would do in Congress for the pressing issues of our times – gun violence, income inequality, climate change, immigration reform and restoring our frayed democracy.”

“Alan is a leader for the common good. He does not take PAC or special interest campaign money – and he was one of the first persons running for office to take that stand, which others have now followed.”

“My wife and I have lived in Newton for more than 50 years. We raised our family here, and we love Newton. We would be so inspired to have Alan Khazei as our representative in Congress. He would hit the ground running in Congress and be a tremendous leader for Newton, for Massachusetts and for the country. I cannot endorse Alan strongly enough. We need Alan Khazei in Congress.”

Responded Alan Khazei, “I am so deeply honored and humbled to have Hubie Jones’ endorsement. From the day I walked into his office at BU in the fall of 1987 to get his advice on City Year, Hubie has been an extraordinary mentor, role model, inspiration, dear friend and colleague. Hubie lives his life by his values and his deep moral compass. I have learned so much from Hubie and am still learning from him. He and his wife Kathy are beacons of social justice for all of us. As a candidate, and if I am honored to represent the 4th District in Congress, I will strive every day to live up to Hubie’s example.”
