FOUR-STAR GENERAL STANLEY MCCHRYSTAL ENDORSES ALAN KHAZEI FOR CONGRESS

“HE’S A MOVEMENT LEADER WHO WILL EMPOWER PEOPLE AND MAKE OUR DEMOCRACY WORK FOR ALL.”

(Brookline, MA) - Praising his dedication to service, empowering people, building coalitions and improving our country and democracy, General Stanley McChrystal endorsed Alan Khazei, City Year Co-Founder, Service Year Alliance Vice-Chair, and service movement leader for Congress in MA-04. General McChrystal’s endorsement comes after Khazei announced the endorsements of local leaders, Civil Rights icon Hubie Jones of Newton, and Brookline CEO Colette Phillips. Khazei also raised over $500,000 and recruited 325 Khazei Corps volunteers in the 3 weeks since entering the race.

“I’m proud to endorse Alan Khazei, a model of servant leadership who leads with his values and has built a national institution that has inspired young people from all walks of life to serve their nation. Alan has made an extraordinary contribution to our local communities and country by co-founding City Year, helping to move the AmeriCorps and Edward M. Kennedy Serve America legislation forward into law, empowering veterans, and strengthening our democracy. At a time of national division, Alan is exactly the kind of representative we need in the U.S. Congress,” said General McChrystal.

A lifelong political independent who, in abiding by the military’s apolitical nature, is rarely involved in politics, Gen. McChrystal made his first Congressional Endorsement of the 2020 cycle in backing Alan Khazei, only the fourth person he has ever endorsed.

Gen. McChrystal is the former commander of United States and Allied Forces in Afghanistan (ISAF) and the Former Commander of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). He is Chair of Service Year Alliance where Alan serves as Vice-Chair, together with John Bridgeland.

“I’ve had the honor of working closely with Alan for more than six years creating the Franklin Project and Service Year Alliance. Young people, veterans, and citizens everywhere who are concerned about our country’s deep divisions and Washington’s failure to address critical issues can trust Alan to be a bridge builder, a tireless champion for the people of Massachusetts and America, and a public servant who will put people and country before politics,” continued McChrystal.

Alan Khazei said: “It’s a tremendous honor to have the support of General Stanley McChrystal, a role model of integrity and the epitome of selfless dedication to country. When General McChrystal embraced voluntary national service, it galvanized our movement. Stan and I share the belief that military and civilian service members are two sides of the same coin. We also share the vision that through service, we can bind together our diverse communities, find our common purpose, reinvigorate our cities and rural areas, empower our veterans, and unleash people power to tackle our challenges.”

In support of Alan Khazei’s bid for Congress, Hubie Jones said, “Alan is a leader for the common good. He does not take PAC or special interest campaign money - and he was one of the first persons running for office to take that stand, which others have now followed.”

In endorsing Alan Khazei, Colette Phillips stated, “We are at an inflection point in our country and we need leaders who know how to build powerful coalitions and leverage the power of people banding together to break the logjam in Washington. We need Alan Khazei.”

ABOUT SERVICE YEAR ALLIANCE

Service Year Alliance is working to make a year of paid, full-time service — a service year — a common expectation and opportunity for all young Americans. A service year before, during, or after college — or as a way to get back on track — gives young people the chance to develop their skills, make an impact on the lives of others, and become the active citizens and leaders our nation needs. Expanding service years has the power to revitalize cities, uplift and educate children at risk, and empower communities struggling with poverty. It can unite the most diverse nation in history, binding people of different backgrounds through common cause. Service Year Alliance is asking nonprofits, higher education institutions, cities and states, companies and foundations, policymakers of both parties, and people of all ages to join the movement.

Service Year Alliance is chaired by General Stanley McChrystal, and Alan Khazei and John Bridgeland serve as vice chairs.
